We recently caught up with Susannah to get in on her personal beauty secrets and tips to living clean and pretty.

Since we ask this question to everyone that walks in the store, how would you describe YOUR skin type?

Mostly balanced and clear. Pores prone to congestion. My skin is an open book. It really shows when I’m caring for myself (or not) inside and out.

What is your morning beauty ritual?

As a beauty writer, I’m trying new products all the time. My routine really varies. Of course I have my favorites, and when I’m just doing my own thing it often looks like this:

Most days, I throw on the May Lindstrom Honey Mud or plain raw honey as my cleansing treatment and let it sit while I do other things. A few mornings per week I mix up Clean Dirt, my favorite exfoliating product. I dry brush before I hop in the shower. Yes, it sounds aspirational rather than practical for a busy person, but it only takes a few minutes and it improves my skin more than anything. I use bar soap strategically and sparingly in the shower. If I’m washing my hair it’s most often with Rahua Voluminous or Josh Rosebrook Balancing Shampoo, usually no conditioner. If I’m not shampooing I use dry shampoo and wrap my hair in a towel before showering. Post-shower, I prefer using body oil on my skin for moisture. My current bottle was made at our Follain body oil workshop. Our store director Alyse designed the carrier oil blend and I designed the fragrance options, then we co-taught the workshop. Lots of fun!

I always spritz my face with a flower mist or toner—usually rosewater or the Jasmine Garden. In the summer I love the Hydrating Accelerator. It smells faintly tropical to me. Must be the ylang ylang and vanilla combo. After a toner, I love to layer the Modern Radiance Concentrate under a face oil. I rotate through face oils depending on what my skin needs. Two I love that Follain carries are the La Bella Figura Barbary Fig Seed Oil and Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum.

My makeup routine changes daily, but I tend to use one brand at a time (like RMS Beauty or W3LL PEOPLE) and do a look that includes light foundation, bronzer/blush and mascara. I love wearing perfume, and I almost always wear one or more of Florescent’s three scents. If I’m wearing deodorant, I usually reach for the gentle and delicious smelling one from Ursa Major. Hair is a low maintenance air-dry situation with the help of Yarok Feed Your Ends and Josh Rosebrook Lift.

What is your evening beauty ritual?

I’m a longtime fan of the One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleansing Oil and use it nightly to remove makeup. I follow this with a toner and then apply a face oil like Barbary fig or rosehip seed oil. I love vitamin C treatments at night, too. It really brightens the complexion and helps with fine lines. Before bed I spritz my room and bedding with a lavender mist, then I use an aromatherapy treatment for some deep breathing & relaxation.

What unsafe conventional product had been the toughest for you to give up?

Mascara. I used a dirty one for special events before falling for W3LL People’s. Nail
polish is tough, too.

Aside from skincare, what’s one ritual that makes you feel the most beautiful?

Spritzing on perfume and taking a moment to experience it.

What 3 tips would give others to help them feel and look beautiful every day?

Use aromatherapy throughout your day. Drink herbal teas galore. Eat healthy fats.

What’s the best piece of beauty advice your mother ever gave you?

My mother wasn’t big on beauty advice, but she did indulge my interest in makeup and skincare growing up. Thanks Mom!

What are your favorite foods that promote beauty from the inside out?

Cabbage (and kraut), blueberries and green juice.

We often abide by the 80/20 rule. Treat your body right 80% of the time and splurge 20% of the time. So....what's your 20%?

Cheeeseburgers and fries. Cookies. Late nights.

What’s the biggest beauty mistake you ever made?
