Meet the Maker: Gianne Doherty, Organic Bath Co.

Our love affair with shea butter continues tomorrow with an extra special DIY Meet the Maker event with one of our favorite local brands, Organic Bath Co! Brand founder, Gianne Doherty, is stopping by the Beacon Hill shop tomorrow evening to teach us how to make travel size Drenched Body Butters to help us survive the winter! Organic Bath Co. is one of our favorite local brands largely because Gianne is such an inspiring industry leader. Check out our interview with her below to learn more about what makes Gianne and her brand so amazing.

Drenched Body Butter

What inspired you to start a healthy skincare line? A few years ago, when my skin began reacting (by way of hives!) to mainstream lotions I had been using, my boyfriend Jay and I ended up making a pure, unscented, shea butter-based body butter for me that my skin still loves to this day. As I learned more about the personal care industry and its lack of regulation, the more determined I became to make safe products for myself, family and friends. Organic Bath Co. began out of necessity with that shea butter-based body butter (now known as Drenched), and we’ve donated a portion of our proceeds to charity since day one!

What is your favorite ingredient to play with when dreaming up new products? Butters. Especially living in New England, a good butter is key for your skin’s moisture, especially during the wintertime. We are launching our Nourish Night Balm for the face in the next few weeks and the base is Shea Butter and Mango Butter.

What is your own personal can’t-live-without product within your line? Right now it’s our Stress Less candle! I shower in the evening and I always moisturize my body with a Stress Less Body product; the aroma helps set me up for a good night’s rest. I like to unplug for a bit before bed: turn the tv off, put the phone away and read a bit. That's my favorite time to light our Stress Less candle.

What do you say to people who have a hard time giving up their favorite conventional products?  Ease yourself into it and be kind to yourself. It can be overwhelming when you first discover how much unnecessary nasties are in conventional products. You may not know where to start and so, you don’t. I started with where our line started: Drenched. Your skin is your body’s largest organ so moisturizing with something that was 100% organic, free of parabens and fragrance was very important to me. I love to treat myself to pedicures, so choosing 5-free nail polish was one of the next steps I made in my healthy beauty journey.

You’re also the founder of W.E.L.L. Summit, which is kicking off its first conference next month! Tell us a bit about what makes this such an exciting event. The W.E.L.L. Summit is not about one speaker or one brand. It's everyone together in one space that makes it special. We were purposeful to not put the Organic Bath Co. name all over the W.E.L.L. Summit because we wanted to set the tone for education and empowerment. The W.E.L.L. Summit is mostly comprised of interactive and intimate breakout sessions all capped at 30 people. We wanted to ensure that all attendees would have a chance to ask questions from our wellness leaders and get those questions answered!

What’s the best piece of beauty advice your mother ever gave you?  Drink water! My mom has always told me that it doesn’t matter how much the creams that I put on my face cost if I am not nourishing my body from inside. She can tell with one look at me if I am not drinking enough water. That, and love yourself. I definitely got my sense of self-care from my mom. She gets herself gifts for special occasions and growing up, she always told me if you don’t love yourself, how can someone else? That lesson stuck with me. Thanks, Mom!
