How to Apply a Face Oil

To say we’re freaks about face oils would be the understatement of the century. We looove them. Like, slather our faces in 3 layers of oil before we go to bed every night kind of love. And while a good old-fashioned face cream definitely has its place in a solid skincare routine, it’s with a bottle of perfectly blended botanical oil where you see the true magic happen on your skin.

So, how do face oils work? It’s all about the molecule size. Compared to creams, which are designed to stay on the surface of our skin and protect, botanical oils have smaller molecules that are the perfect size to sink rapidly into the first layer of the skin where that youthful bounce and elasticity is maintained. Oils contain extremely high levels of nutrients and essential fatty acids that feed and heal the skin from the inside out, which is especially important for problematic skin. If your skin needs treatment for a specific issue (breakouts, rosacea, fine lines, scarring) a well-made oil is going to be your new best friend.

How should you be applying them? The method is just as important as those precious ingredients inside. A face oil should never feel slick or greasy, and if it does, then this lesson is for you. Here’s our face oil application 101.

First, clean your face with a cleanser that’s right for your skin type (i.e. if you have dry skin and you’re lathering on a gel-based foaming cleanser that makes your skin feel super tight and kinda like the desert, swap it out for a more gentle option.) If it’s the morning and you opt out of washing (which we highly recommend) spritz your face with a moisture mist or alcohol-free toner. It is thought that moist skin is 10 times more permeable than dry skin and we want to make sure we’re getting the most our of our oils.

Next, apply a very small amount (about 2-3 drops) to your fingertips (not the palm of your hand please, this is precious stuff we’re dealing with!) Rub fingertips lightly together and gently PRESS oil into your skin. We’re not rubbing here, we’re gently patting, which helps to drive the oil into the pores, creating a velvety finish, not an oil slick.

If you’re opting for a cream layer à la SPF or a nice thick night cream, wait a few minutes and then apply. Important skincare life hack that we should all note: always apply skincare products from thinnest to thickest, with your sun protection going on last. A few minutes between each application is best to guarantee absorption.

I had no idea sunscreen should go on last. Thanks for the tip!
